Previous leaders
Regulation of NGOs in Uganda has evolved since 1989, from an operational board to today's Bureau. This page recognises the leaders who have served across each period. Where a name is still being confirmed, it will be added here.
1989 - 2006
An operational board oversaw the registration of NGOs, reporting directly to the Minister of Internal Affairs under the NGO Registration Statute.
2006 - 2016
The NGO Registration (Amendment) Act, 2006 (Cap 113) strengthened the National Board for NGOs and its monitoring role.
2016 - 2020
The NGO Act, 2016 established the National Bureau for NGOs with a Board of Directors and an Executive Director, and created the DNMCs and SNMCs.
2020 - present
Later amendments repositioned the Bureau as a department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, reporting to the Permanent Secretary. The Bureau is led by an Executive Director, supported by a Secretary to the Bureau and a senior management team.
